A Compassionate Supervisor Helps An Employee Address His Excessive And Hazardous Drinking After A Destroyed Relationship
Barry dropped out of high school when he was seventeen years old and eventually got a job at a local landfill. For the last three years he has gained a reputation as a diligent and hard-working individual who hardly ever calls off work because of illness.
Roughly five months ago he began going out with a lady named Carol. They seemed to hit it off right away and looked like they had a lot of fun with one another.
When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This circumstance changed when Barry and Carol began dating on a fairly regular basis. In fact, their relationship was going fine until Carol without warning called Barry one night about 3:30 AM and said that she had to stop dating him and that she couldn't tell him the reasons for her decision at that moment.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to her condo and immediately discovered that Carol had already moved out. Barry took this awfully hard. In reality, he was taken aback because they seemed to be getting along so very well.
So what did Barry do? Rather than working through his suffering and pain, he started getting drunk just about every night. It didn't take long for his buddies at work and for his supervisor to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least once every week and that he routinely called off ill. What is more, some of his co-workers made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and said that Barry over and over again came to work with a noticeable smell of alcohol on his breath or on his clothes.
Barry's boss heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Thursday morning he invited Barry into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed a profound change in his sick time, behavior, work performance, and in his attendance.
"Barry, I'm not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that knowledgeable about alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen many of my relatives and friends experience some really painful issues because of their irresponsible and excessive drinking. My suggestion is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol abuse and alcoholism can do to an individual."
"Why is this important? When people engage in abusive and excessive drinking, their drinking difficulties not only adversely affect the problem drinker, but they also adversely affect her or his friends, co-workers, family, relatives, and neighbors. Barry, in sum, I would like to see you get some help for your irresponsible and hazardous drinking from our employee's assistance program."
Barry admired his manager a lot and as a consequence followed through with his recommendation the next work day when he called and scheduled an appointment with someone in the company's employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't automatically feel any better or less depressed about the sadness he still feels for Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his boss and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave him some emotional relief for the first time in several months and he honestly experienced some hope that he would get his life back on track.
