Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Link Between Hazardous Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Training

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous alcohol abuse specialists affirm that liquor, beer, and wine ads produced by the media are a key reason for the increase in teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcoholism authorities believe that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and ease of access of beer, liquor, and wine in our society. Still other alcohol abuse experts believe that numerous adolescents engage in risky drinking due to the increased pressure that they are subjected to.

From a somewhat different viewpoint, due to the fact that both parents in a number of families work full or part-time, the lack of parental supervision unquestionably has to play an important role in the escalation of teenage alcohol abuse. And lastly, various alcoholism specialists assert that the proliferation of youth alcohol abuse is due, in some way, to our "anything goes" society.

One aspect of teenage alcohol abuse that seems to be poorly reported in the alcohol dependency research literature, in spite of this, is the scarcity of educational courses that teach adolescents how to enhance their coping skills so that their abusive and hazardous drinking behavior is significantly decreased or exterminated. Stated differently, scientific research has uncovered the fact that there is an indirect association between poor coping skills and careless and abusive drinking.

Essentially, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the higher the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a correct contention, why isn't coping skills instruction a fundamental part of the educational curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

Let us create a scenario for explanatory purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are trained how to achieve outstanding coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets complicated, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a healthier and more successful way, as opposed to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into operation.

More explicitly, students who demonstrate outstanding coping skills will be more able to think proactively and display quality decision making as opposed to teenagers who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to learn good coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of careless and abusive drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, additionally, if young people not only received top quality coping skills training but also got an exceptional education that focused on the long term and short term devastating outcomes associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills training, it is declared, would help adolescents avoid the obvious appeal correlated with teen drinking and, for that reason, would significantly decrease the alcohol abuse shown by the youth in our country.

There are surely several sound reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in a harmful manner. Such a complex problem demands a comprehensive and more pertinent response by our politicians, educators, students, and parents so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's difficulties in a more rewarding and accountable manner rather than resorting to hazardous drinking to solve their problems.
